The '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development', adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are at the heart of this call for action, have formed a central theme in the work of President Higgins.

The President has referred to the Sustainable Development Goals as a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity, and he has highlighted their importance in his work aimed at promoting debate about crafting new models of human development, founded on ethics and critical thinking, and drawing on human rights and dignity.

"The Sustainable Development Goals implore us to 'think long', and to focus on the needs not only of those who currently dwell on this planet, but also those yet to come."
