President Higgins on Bullying and Cyber-bullying

Published: Thu 5th Nov, 2020 | 17:45

President Higgins has said that violence and bullying, including through social media, have a destructive effect on people’s lives and rob them of their dignity.

During many of his visits to schools, the President has spoken to pupils and teachers about the problems of bullying and cyber-bullying, stressing the importance of recognising when bullying occurs. The President has underlined the responsibility of school communities, pupils and parents to identify, prevent and deal with abusive and threatening online communication.

"There's a huge difference between taking the responsibility of words on paper, or words in sound, and sending it in without any consequence whatsoever for where it lands, in relation to wounding another person, destroying another person."
