President Higgins visited Loughan House Open Centre in Co. Cavan, to present a Gold Award to one of the Gaisce participants.
President Higgins has been encouraging Gaisce to place even more emphasis on engaging with disadvantaged young men and women, by expanding the “President’s Challenge” programme to include people in detention and in direct provision centres.
The President has previously presented Gaisce participants with awards in the Midlands Prison and in Oberstown Children Detention Campus, and in June this year, he invited representatives from the Irish Prison Service and Gaisce to Áras an Uachtaráin, to mark the growing collaboration between the two organisations.

“As President of Ireland, I have made, and continue to make, many visits to prisons around the country, meeting inmates and staff alike, and it has been a privilege for me to personally present Gaisce Awards to prisoners who have met the challenges involved in completing the Bronze, Silver or Gold levels.”
