As in previous years, President Michael D. Higgins will attend the GAA All-Ireland Minor and Senior Football Finals at Croke Park.
As an avid sports fan, President Higgins has paid tribute to the GAA on many occasions, highlighting not only the skills and achievements of the players and their coaches, but also the volunteering ethos and community spirit that are central in the GAA.
In 2013, he said: "The GAA continues to be so much more than a sports association or a series of fixtures and results. It is the beating heart of many communities across the country, connecting neighbour to neighbour, promoting inter-generational solidarity among young and old and uniting a diverse and eclectic mix of people as they cheer together for their county colours."
