Rugadh i Nua-Eabhrac é ar an 14 Deireadh Fómhair 1882, agus tugadh go hÉirinn é agus é dhá bhliain go leith d’aois. Sa bhliain 1910 phós sé Sinéad Ní Fhlanagáin.
Múinteoir agus léachtóir ollscoile a bhí ann, agus liostaigh sé le hÓglaigh na hÉireann nuair a bunaíodh iad in 1913. Ghlac sé páirt mar Cheannfort in Éirí Amach 1916. Daoradh chun báis é, agus iomalartaíodh an pionós go pianseirbhís saoil. Scaoileadh saor é faoi Mhaithiúnas Ginearálta in 1917.
Toghadh mar Fheisire Parlaiminte Shinn Féin é ar son Oirthear an Chláir in 1917 agus atoghadh mar ionadaí parlaiminte ar son an Chláir é sna hOlltoghcháin ina dhiaidh sin go dtí gur toghadh mar Uachtarán é in 1959.
Bhunaigh sé páirtí Fhianna Fáil in 1926 agus ó 1932 go 1937 bhí sé ina Uachtarán ar Ard-Chomhairle an tSaorstáit agus ina Aire Gnóthaí Eachtracha.
Bhí sé ina Uachtarán ar Chomhairle Chonradh na Náisiún ag a 68ú seisiún agus ag na Seisiúin Speisialta i Meán Fómhair agus i nDeireadh Fómhair 1932 agus ina Uachtarán ar Thionól Chonradh na Náisiún, 1938.
Tar éis don phobal an Bunreacht a achtú, ceapadh Eamon De Valera ina Thaoiseach agus Aire Gnóthaí Eachtracha ó 1937 go 1948. Bhí sé ina Thaoiseach arís ó 1951 go 1954, agus ó 1957 go 1959.
Ar an 25 Meitheamh 1959 insealbhaíodh é mar Uachtarán Éireann.
Fuair sé bás ar an 29 Lúnasa 1975.
He was born in New York on 14 October, 1882, and was brought to Ireland at the age of two and a half years. In 1910 he married Sinéad Ní Fhlannagáin.
A teacher and university lecturer, he joined the Irish Volunteers when they were founded in 1913. As a Commandant he took part in the 1916 Irish National Uprising. He was sentenced to death, the sentence being commuted to penal servitude for life. He was released on General Amnesty in 1917.
He was elected Sinn Féin M.P. for East Clare in 1917 and re-elected as parliamentary representative for Clare at subsequent General Elections until his election as President in 1959.
He founded the Fianna Fáil Party in 1926 and from 1932 – 37 he was President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State and Minister for External Affairs.
He was President of Council of the League of Nations at its 68th and Special Sessions, September and October 1932 and President of the Assembly of the League of Nations, 1938.
Following enactment by the people of the Constitution, Eamon De Valera became Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and Minister for External Affairs from 1937 – 48. He was Taoiseach again from 1951 – 54, 1957 – 59.
On 25 June, 1959 he was inaugurated as President of Ireland.
He died on 29 August 1975.
