President Higgins welcomed members of the Yazidi community to Áras an Uachtaráin on a courtesy call.
The group included Natia Navrouzov, Executive Director of Yazda, Shireen Khero Khudeeda a survivor of ISIS and members of Yazda, the global community-led institution that protects and champions all religious and ethnic minority communities in Iraq and the KRI.
In November 2016 the President and Sabina Higgins welcomed Nadia Murad, the Iraqi Yazidi human rights activist, to Áras an Uachtaráin.
In 2018, Nadia Murad and Congolese gynecologist Denis Mukwege were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict."
