President Michael D. Higgins welcomed US Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders and his wife, Jane O'Meara Sanders, at Áras an Uachtaráin.
Senator Sanders is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history but has a close relationship with the Democratic Party and sought the party’s presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, coming second in both campaigns.
The President previously welcomed Senator Sanders to Áras an Uachtaráin during his visit to Ireland in June 2017.
