President Michael D. Higgins opened the annual general meeting of the International Brigade Memorial Trust (IBMT) in Liberty Hall on Saturday 15 October.
The IBMT keeps alive the memory and spirit of the 2,500 volunteers from Britain and Ireland who fought fascism in the Spanish Civil War. Some 275 Irish men and women joined the International Brigades and associated medical services during the Civil War, in an effort to stop General Franco’s troups from toppling the elected government of the Spanish Republic.
