President Higgins hosted a reception in honour of the Irish Family Planning Association, marking the organisation’s 50th anniversary.
Founded at a time when Ireland had a ban on contraceptives, the Fertility Guidance Clinic, later renamed Irish Family Planning Association, worked at the edges of the law until the legalisation of contraceptives in 1980.
As a lecturer at University College Galway, and as a member of the All Party Oireachtas Interest Group on Sexual and Reproductive Health, now President Higgins was a long-time supporter of the organisation.
Since his inauguration, President Higgins has welcomed many civil society organisations to Áras an Uachtaráin, in support of the staff and volunteers of many organisations working to build a better, more inclusive and more sustainable Ireland.
