President Higgins attended the Opening Session of the UN General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The President was accompanied at the General Assembly by Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Mícheál Martin.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.
President Higgins had conversations at the General Assembly with a number of Heads of State, senior politicians and heads of UN agencies including, amongst others, President of the United States Joe Biden, President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Chile Gabriel Boric, President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni, President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera, Foreign Minister of Mexico Alicia Bárcena, King Abdullah II of Jordan, King Letsie III of Lesotho, President of the UN General Assembly Philémon Yang, President of the World Bank Ajay Banga, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development Alvaro Lario, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization QU Dongyu, and Commissioner-General of UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini.
