Speech at the launch of the celebrations of the bicentenary of Dún Laoghaire Harbour

President Higgins visited Dun Laoghaire to launch the programme of events celebrating the harbour’s 200th anniversary.

Construction of the harbour began in 1815 and the foundation stone for the harbour's new granite piers was laid in 1817. In his speech marking the 200th anniversary of the harbour, the President focused on the changing nature of the harbour and the society around it, and thanked all those involved in the harbour's preservation and operation.

Thug an tUachtarán cuairt ar Dhún Laoghaire chun clár imeachtaí a dhéanfaidh comóradh ar bhunú an chalafoirt 200 bliain ó shin a lainseáil.

Cuireadh tús le tógáil an chalafoirt in 1815 agus leagadh bunchloch chéanna nua eibhir an chalafoirt in 1817. Ina óráid chun bunú an chalafoirt 200 bliain ó shin a chomóradh, dhírigh an tUachtarán ar an gcaoi a bhfuil an calafort agus an tsochaí thart timpeall air ag athrú, agus ghlac sé buíochas leo siúd go léir atá bainteach lena chaomhnú agus lena hoibriú.
