Sabina Higgins Speech at an event to mark the 20th anniversary of Yoga Therapy Ireland

Marino Institute of Education, Dublin, 1st February 2020

I am delighted to join you all here today to celebrate this significant anniversary. May I also take this opportunity to thank Yoga Therapy Ireland for all you have done to promote the practice of yoga around Ireland.

Today yoga is taught and practiced in towns and villages across the nation, enjoyed by groups as varied as active retirement associations, expectant mothers, athletes, hospital patients, school children and so many others who benefit from this truly inclusive art form.

Across the twenty years since your establishment your achievements have been considerable. Indeed, through the many courses on specialist yoga training that you offer, you can proudly claim that over 500 yoga teachers and specialists owe much of their skills to Yoga Therapy Ireland.

The meaning of the word ‘Yoga’ is, of course, ‘Unity’ and the practice of yoga enables us to become aware of the deep sense of harmony that exists between all forms of life.  That is such an enriching gift to all those of us who strive to create a calmer and more meaningful life.

All of you who have worked so hard to ensure the ongoing success of Yoga Therapy Ireland can take great pride in the important part you have played, and continue to play, in bestowing mental well being and physical fitness on those who practice yoga.

I wish you every success as you continue to promote this important art form amongst citizens of all ages, and from all walks of life. I also congratulate you as you celebrate this important milestone.
