REMARKS BY PRESIDENT McALEESE AT THE PRESENTATION OF AWARDS AT THE ESAT YOUNG SCIENTIST

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT McALEESE AT THE PRESENTATION OF AWARDS AT THE ESAT YOUNG SCIENTIST AND TECHNOLOGY EXPO 2001 RDS

It is a great pleasure to join you once again at the Esat Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. Each year that I come here, I am even more impressed by the extraordinary energy, enthusiasm and passion for science and technology demonstrated by so many students.

An enormous amount of hard work has gone into every single project at this exhibition, not just by the students themselves, but also on the part of their families and especially their teachers. I would like to pay tribute to each member of that wider team for the encouragement, enthusiasm, skill and dedication which lies behind every single entry.

I would also like to commend Angela Keegan, Chairperson of the Judging Panel, and her panel of judges headed by Dr Tony Scott, for undertaking their difficult task of selecting the winners with such integrity and commitment. I know from talking to the judges over the years how much they enjoy this event but also how exhausting and draining the decision making is. Yet busy people that they are, they commit to it willingly and even joyfully.

Here everyone has gained from participation, everyone leaves here with a deep sense of achievement and pride. But there are those who leave with an extra special sense of pride as this year’s prizewinners. These prestigious awards recognise their individual and collective achievements, originality, depth of research and excellence of presentation. Theirs is a truly remarkable achievement, and I know that everyone here wishes you, as I do, every success for the future - well done and many, many congratulations.
