MILLENNIUM MESSAGE

MILLENNIUM MESSAGE

Is mór an chúis áthais dom sonas agus séan a ghuí oraibh go léir ar ócáid na Míleaoise Nua.

It is a great joy to share with you this very special moment in history as we celebrate a new beginning, a new Millennium.

Soon the fireworks and fun of this Millennium eve will have faded away, but we will still have much to celebrate and much to look forward to.

This generation has seen the turn of history’s tide, the lifting of old shadows. We have witnessed the birth of an economic miracle and the dawn of peace in Northern Ireland. Around the world, the global Irish family joins us in looking at this new Ireland with pride and respect.

We know that many in our community still endure life on the margins, watching as today’s successful Ireland passes them by, excluded from that miracle. For them, too, the future must hold real hope of change.

Our prosperity has now given us the means and opportunity to make of Ireland, the best, the most egalitarian society it has ever been, to fulfill the hopes and ambitions of all those who have long dreamed of such an Ireland. What we can accomplish together is extraordinary, if the spirit of generosity that for so long characterised us as a people, lives on in each human heart – and all the signs are that it does.

Two thousand years ago, the child whose birth we celebrate in this Jubilee year, grew to a man renowned for the miracles he worked. As we celebrate this new Millennium, this generation has the chance to create miracles of its own.
