Statement from President Higgins following a telephone conversation with President Van Der Bellen

President Michael D. Higgins today, 9 March 2021, had a lengthy telephone conversation with the Federal President of the Republic of Austria, H.E. Alexander Van Der Bellen, when they discussed European and global issues.
During their conversation, President Higgins and President Van Der Bellen discussed the Covid-19 crisis, the response to it, and what might be appropriate policy measures to deal with its aftermath.
Among the other topics discussed were the future deepening of bilateral relations between Austria and Ireland, Brexit, Ireland’s priorities on the United Nations Security Council, and the importance of intensified multilateral action to combat climate change, growing inequality, poverty and marginalisation.
