Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the death of Jacqueline O’Brien

Date: Wed 16th Mar, 2016 | 10:36

Today President Higgins said:

"I have learned with great sadness of the death of Jacqueline O'Brien, who in her partnership with Vincent O'Brien made such an enormous contribution to the reputation of Ireland as a leading country for breeding and training horses.

As an author and photographer she produced some of the most beautiful works on the great Irish houses and castles and on the significant architecture of Dublin.

Her four books were best-sellers and many in Ireland will also remember the work she co-authored with Ivor Herbert on Vincent O'Brien's great horses.

She was a wonderful bridge between the people of Ireland and Australia.

She married Vincent O'Brien in 1951 and was closely involved with all the great achievements in Ballydoyle. Well-known not only in Ireland and Australia, but also in the United States and Europe she will be missed by a large circle of friends, who will recall her sparkling company.

Sabina and I were privileged to know her."
