Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the death of Gertrude Mallon

"It is with great sadness that I have learnt of the death of Gertrude Mallon (née Cush), beloved wife of former SDLP leader Seamus Mallon.
Beyond her own caring contribution as a nurse, Seamus Mallon has often described his wife as a crucial source of support and encouragement throughout his political career.
In Armagh and further afield, her contribution to the SDLP and the campaigns for the politics of peace was widely recognised.
I wish to convey my sincere condolences to Seamus, their daughter Orla, son-in-law Mark, granddaughter Lara and sister Philomena."
