Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the death of Tadhg Ó hÉalaithe

Date: Thu 13th Jan, 2022 | 12:37

"It is with great sadness that friends and former colleagues, in every aspect of the Irish language and culture, will have learned of the death of Tadhg Ó hÉalaithe.

Tadhg served as Secretary General of the Department of Arts, Culture and Gaeltacht from its founding when I had the privilege of being Minister.   Combining a number of previously disparate responsibilities around what was previously Roinn na Gaeltachta was a great but rewarding challenge in which he gave support and leadership.

During that period Tadhg worked with an inspiring and dedicated group, including the late Colm Ó Briain my adviser, getting effective use of European Structural Funding in so many areas, and giving support for many initiatives in heritage, film, and the Irish language including Teilifís na Gaeilge.  Tadhg was a dedicated and effective public servant and I valued his vision, commitment, humour and support during my time as Minister.

May I extend my sympathies to his wife Mai, his children Nora, Patrick and Mary, and to his extended family.”
