Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the death of Liam Kavanagh

Date: Mon 13th Dec, 2021 | 18:35

“It is with sadness that people across Co. Wicklow, and indeed Irish politics as a whole, will have heard of the death today of Liam Kavanagh. Liam was a rock of politics in the county, serving as a TD from 1969 through eight further successful general elections campaigns until 1997.

He was a dedicated public servant and an effective Minister, who will perhaps be best remembered for the many council homes he delivered during his term as Minister for the Environment in the 1980s.

Throughout his time as politics – as a TD, Minister and MEP – and later as a member of the Standards in Public Office Commission, Liam Kavanagh proved himself a man of great integrity and I know his loss will be felt by those he served which such dedication throughout his life.

I would like to extend my own and Sabina’s deepest sympathies to Liam’s wife Margaret, daughter Rosemary, grandchildren Áine and Rían, brother Jimmy and sister Therese as well as all his extended friends and family.”
