Statement by President Higgins on the floods in Athens

"May I, as President of Ireland, send the sympathy and offer the solidarity of the Irish people to the people of Athens and Greece who have just recently suffered loss of life and damage to their homes, with all the ensuing hardship it brings, as a result of the floods in Athens and surrounding areas.
The burden of these recent disasters imposed on the people of Greece has to be understood in the context of the huge challenge they are already facing in relation to providing for the welfare of migrants fleeing from conflict and natural disasters.
Now is surely the time for all the members of the European Union to respond to Greece's position as a union of solidarity, cohesion and care."
