Statement by President Higgins on the death of Macdara Woods

Date: Tue 19th Jun, 2018 | 14:40

"It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of Macdara Woods, the poet whose collections of poetry and work as the founding editor of the literary magazine “Cyphers” have been an important part of Ireland’s cultural heritage.

Courageous and generous in his support for Ireland’s poets, and a member of Aosdána since 1986, he produced a body of work which was both lyrical and musical, and which has been set to music by various composers.

Both Sabina and I wish to express our deepest sympathies to his wife Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and son Niall, to the other members of his extended family, and his wide circle of friends."
