Statement by President Higgins on the death of Giscard d'Estaing

The passing of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, former President of France, represents the passing of a French President associated with the modernisation of the French Republic.
His contribution will be remembered by those interested in the design of the European Union and its possible constitutional options.
His role as Chairman of the Convention of the Future of Europe initiated, and gave a lead to, one of the most extensive debates on the concept and future of a European union.
Along with many others in Europe, on behalf of the people of Ireland, I wish to express my deepest sympathies to his family and to the people, government and President of France.
