Statement by President Higgins on International Day of Charity

Date: Wed 5th Sep, 2018 | 01:24

“Today, as we celebrate the United Nations designated International Day of Charity, it is appropriate that we call on one another to celebrate the vital work undertaken by the countless people who volunteer their time and skills in the service of others.

Charity, volunteerism and active citizenship are vital ingredients in any healthy and resilient society. It is by encouraging our citizens to empower themselves – and each other –  that we can build the inclusive and rights-based community that will best serve our existing and future generations.

As we mark this International Day of Charity let us pay tribute to all those who continue to work for the alleviation of poverty and suffering, and to those who work to eliminate barriers to the full realisation of human rights for all.”
