The following statement has been issued by President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins on the death of Lieutenant General William "Bill" Callaghan.

“I have learned with great sadness of the death of Lieutenant General Bill Callaghan.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to his family. And it is most appropriate that I as President express my gratitude for his service to this country and to the international community.

Lt. General Callaghan's role as commander of the United Nations forces in the Middle East was a most distinguished one. His steadfast commitment to advancing peace and prosperity in the Middle East and his leadership throughout his career was recognised by all those working for international peace. His unwavering support for international law and multilateral cooperation drew the respect of his peers all over the world.

He has left not only a great legacy for the armed forces but for all those who work for international peace.”
