President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins congratulates Sportswomen of the Year

The President has today congratulated the winners of the Irish Times / Sport Ireland Sportswomen of the Year Awards, Rena Buckley, Briege Corkery and Catherina McKiernan.
In his statement, the President emphasised the importance of women's participation in sports and highlighted the need for women's sports to be given appropriate attention and support by members of the media and the public alike.
The President said:
"Their achievements and prowess mark them out as deserving winners of the Sportswomen of the Year Awards and it is my sincere hope that their example will inspire thousands of women and girls throughout the country to participate - and seek to excel - in sports.
Not only do our sporting heroes provide us with role models, they also illustrate the power of skill, dedication and team work in a most tangible way. The achievements of our female athletes deserve our attention, support and admiration, both in the stadiums and the media."
