Date: Thu 12th May, 2016 | 12:25

The annual Féile Chnoc na Gaoithe (‘Windswept Hill’) has established itself in recent years as a weekend of traditional music, song and dance.

This year’s festival will feature a special opening event to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. The event, entitled ‘Forfhógra na Cásca’ (‘Easter Proclamation’), is organised by Tulla Comhaltas Cultural Centre, in conjunction with the Tulla History Society and St Mochulla’s National School.

As Guest of Honour, President Michael D. Higgins has been invited to deliver a speech at the Féile, reflecting on the historic significance of the 1916 Easter Rising and its importance for Irish culture and society.

The President’s speech is part of a series he has undertaken on the cultural, social and political context of the Easter Rising, emphasising that the leaders of the Rising were inspired not just by a set of political ideals, but also by a deep awareness of Ireland’s global links, as well as its deep, rich, cultural and spiritual heritage.
