Statement on the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize

President Michael D. Higgins has conveyed his congratulations to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on being awarded the 2019 Nobel Prace Prize.
"On behalf of the people of Ireland I wish to congratulate Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on being awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee, in awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is recognising his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation and, in particular, bringing the people of Ethiopia and Eritrea closer together.
It is fitting that this year’s prize, the 99th such prize awarded in the history of the Nobel Peace Prize, is awarded to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, a country that embodies so much of the hope and strength of the African continent.”
