President Higgins has accepted an invitation to give a keynote address at the European Union Institute’s 2-day “State of the Union 2018” conference, focusing on the theme “Solidarity in Europe”.

The President will address the conference, which is an annual event for high-level reflection on the European Union.

The President’s speech is entitled ‘Solidarity in Europe - Achieving Authenticity in the European Street’ and focuses on the need to increase citizens’ involvement in discussion about the future of Europe and the importance of re-asserting the EU’s core egalitarian and humane values at a time when the continent is facing not just economic but also social, political and cultural challenges

This year’s conference will be addressed by four Heads of State: President Mattarella of Italy, President Higgins of Ireland, President Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal and President Pavlopoulos of the Hellenic Republic.

In the evening of 10 May, President Mattarella will host a high-level dinner for President Higgins, President Rebelo de Sousa and President Pavlopoulos, and will facilitate further discussions between the four Presidents on the future of the European Union.
