Date: Thu 20th Aug, 2020 | 15:54

In a letter to H.E. Prithvirajsing Roopun, President of Mauritius, President Higgins expressed his concerns about the impact of the oil spill caused by the MV Wakashio, which ran aground on a coral reef off the south-eastern coast of the country.

President Higgins stated that the spill represents the worst ecological disaster to hit the country in recent times, putting unprecedented stress on the natural environment, and on Mauritius’ efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Noting that international assistance was beginning to arrive, President Higgins assured President Roopun of Ireland’s solidarity.
