President gives the opening address at the summit entitled “Independence and Interdependence”

"The future of cities is the future of civilisation."

President Higgins today addressed a summit of mayors of US and Irish cities, taking place in Croke Park. He spoke of how, as the world continues to urbanise, the drive to mitigate the effects of climate change must come from cities.

President delivers the inaugural Irish Association for Contemporary European Studies Annual Lecture

President Michael D. Higgins delivered the first Annual Lecture of the Irish Association of Contemporary European Studies. 

In his speech, the President reflected on the origins of the European Union and its Member States' responses to contemporary challenges, such as terrorism, migration and social cohesion..
