On the second day of their State Visit to the United Kingdom, President and Sabina Higgins were escorted by The Duke of York to the Grand Stairs in Windsor Castle to view the colours of five Irish regiments of the British army which were disbanded following the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
The regiments disbanded following the Anglo Irish Treaty of 1922 were the Connaught Rangers, the Royal Munster Fusiliers, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, the Princes of Wales’s Leinster Regiment and the Royal Irish Regiment.
