President receives Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Undersecretary General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs

President Higgins welcomed United Nations Under-Secretary General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu to Áras an Uachtaráín.

As High Representative, Ms. Nakamitsu is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UN Secretary General’s ‘Agenda for Disarmament’, which aims to eliminate nuclear arms and other deadly weapons that, in the words of the Secretary General is just “one mechanical, electronic or human error away” from mass destruction.

The ‘Agenda for Disarmament’ is based on the Sustainable Development Goals, which President and Sabina have actively championed since they were adopted by UN member states in 2015.

Earlier this month, President Higgins spoke about the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals, and Ireland’s links with the UN, in an address to representatives from Small Island Developing States. Click here to read, or listen to, the President’s address.
