President Michael D. Higgins today sent his best wishes to the Great Britain and Ireland team competing in the Curtis Cup golf tournament, being held in Dun Laoghaire:

“May I extend greetings to all participants in this year’s Curtis Cup, and my best wishes for success to the Great Britain and Ireland team.

Every two years, the Curtis Cup provides us with an opportunity to witness the talents and skills of the finest women amateur players from the USA, Britain and Ireland.

I have no doubt that Maria Dunne, Leona Maguire and Olivia Mehaffey will represent Ireland to the best of their abilities, and that this year’s competition will provide another thrilling contest.

At this, the second ever staging of the Curtis Cup in Ireland, perhaps we can change the history of the Cup, and initiate a period of European success at the contest.

I am also pleased to hear reports that the GB and Ireland team have already taken an early lead in the opening foursomes.

Guím gach rath orthu don todhchaí.”
