Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the death of Dario Fo

Date: Thu 13th Oct, 2016 | 10:43

"It is with sadness that I have learnt of the death of the great Italian writer and public intellectual Dario Fo, whose plays were performed all over Europe and beyond.

Honoured with the Nobel Prize for literature in 1997, his plays were produced on several occasions in Ireland.

Through his work and writing, Dario Fo challenged established convention, including in the political realm. His contribution to improvisational theatre and the oral tradition in Italian culture and street theatre confirmed him as a unique story teller.

Europe has lost a powerful advocate for creativity and the arts.

His wit, courage and subversive talent will be deeply missed not just by all those who love theatre but by everyone who values original thought and political engagement."
