Statement by President Michael D. Higgins - Oscar for "Stutterer"

Date: Mon 29th Feb, 2016 | 12:05

Welcoming the success of Irish film 'Stutterer' at the Oscars ceremony, President Higgins said today:

"The presence of such a significant group of Irish film makers and technicians at tonight's 88th Academy Awards ceremony is a great tribute to the Irish film industry.

The nominations in a number of categories are a recognition of the talent that now exists in Ireland's film community.

It is now accepted internationally that Ireland has an accomplished film industry, providing a great return from the investment in film - made over recent decades - through highly skilled jobs and an enhanced international reputation.

I send my warmest congratulations to Ben Cleary and the team behind 'Stutterer' and to all the Irish nominees and those who are travelling with them. And I would like to wish them every success, not just tonight but in the years to come - years that, with appropriate care and support, augur well for the Irish film community."
