Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia

Date: Thu 26th Nov, 2020 | 11:23

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, has expressed his concern at the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia and his hopes that regional efforts to assist in resolving the situation will be embraced.

Recalling his trips to Ethiopia, President Higgins underlined the need for all parties to bring what influence they can to bear on achieving an outcome that urgently de-escalates the conflict, addresses the humanitarian needs of those who have been affected and re-directs political energies to find a lasting resolution to the crisis.

President Higgins reflected on the hope placed by so many in the positive political and economic developments within Ethiopia in recent years.

President Higgins said: “Wise counsel is now required to help those in positions of leadership to step back from the brink and create the space for dialogue and engagement in the interests of the people. As President of Ireland, I offer my support to those efforts by friends of Ethiopia from the African Union region and from beyond, to help bring about a speedy cessation of hostilities and to find a sustainable way forward.”
