Statement by President Michael D. Higgins following a meeting with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan

President Michael D. Higgins met today with Mr. Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London.
President Higgins in welcoming Mayor Khan to Ireland thanked him, on behalf of the Irish people and in particular the Irish communities in London, for the Mayor’s work in relation to the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in the capital city of the United Kingdom.
President Higgins and Mayor Khan discussed a wide range of issues of mutual concern, including climate change, sustainable development, housing, transport and ‘Brexit’.
President Higgins also expressed his sympathies and support for the people of London, who have experienced a number of terrorist attacks in recent years, and the tragedy of Grenfell Towers.
The discussions also focused on the importance of close cooperation between Dublin and London. President Higgins stressed the importance of linking economic prosperity to greater social cohesion and solidarity, in and between countries.
