Statement by President Connolly on the death of Geraldine O’Grady

Date: Wed 12th Nov, 2025 | 22:06

“As President of Ireland, I join with all those who have expressed their sadness on learning of the death of the renowned classical violinist Geraldine O'Grady.

Geraldine was internationally recognised as a musician of the greatest skill, who leaves a wonderful legacy of work.

As the first female leader of the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra, Geraldine was an inspirational figure for many musicians, while her television and radio programmes brought a love to violin music to so many members of the public.

May I extend my deepest condolences to Geraldine's husband Des Keogh, to her daughter Oonagh, with whom she performed with such distinction, to all of her family, so many of whom have made such distinguished musical contributions themselves, and to all her many friends and admirers in Ireland and across the world.”
