Date: Mon 18th Apr, 2016 | 10:49

On 21 April, President Michael D. Higgins will have a full day of engagements in County Kerry, with community visits and commemorative events for Roger Casement.

In the morning, the President will visit Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn in Tralee.

Later that morning, the President will attend a wreath-laying ceremony for Roger Casement. The ceremony, taking place as part of the State Commemorations programme, will see full military honours and a Guard of Honour. The President will have an opportunity to hear performances by Róisín Dubh and the Lonely Banna Strand which will be followed by a re-enactment of Roger Casement's speech.

This event commemorates the diplomat and humanitarian, Roger Casement, who on 21 April 1916 was captured by British forces, having come ashore on Banna Strand from a German U-Boat.

In the afternoon, the President will unveil a sculpture of Roger Casement in Ardfert, Co. Kerry and will have an opportunity to meet with various community groups prior to a tour of Ardfert Cathedral.

The visit concludes with a visit to the exhibition “Casement in Kerry: A Revolutionary Journey” in Tralee which showcases Roger Casement's interesting life journey.
