President congratulates President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal

President Higgins today sent his congratulations to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on his re-election as President of the Portuguese Republic.
The President wrote:
"As President of Ireland I take great pleasure in conveying my warmest congratulations to you on your re-election as President of the Portuguese Republic.
The people of Portugal have placed their trust in you at a time of great challenges, not least those presented by the spread and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. My thoughts are with those families who have lost loved ones as a result of the virus, and with all those who continue to provide those critical essential services to ensure that your country can continue to function.
May I congratulate you on the mandate bestowed on you by the Portuguese people, and send you my very best wishes for the coming years.
I look forward to working with you, in our shared community of European nations.”
