President Higgins received Professor Attiya Waris to Áras an Uachtaráin on a courtesy call.
Professor Waris is the current UN Independent Expert on Foreign Debt and other related international financial obligations of States on Human Rights and is the only Professor of Fiscal Law and Policy in Eastern Africa.
Professor Waris is a speaker at the 2024 Dóchas conference, Dóchas at 50: Sustainable Development in a Time of Climate Crisis, where President Higgins will deliver an address which will note the work undertaken by Professor Waris on debt restructuring, tax justice grounded in human rights, systemic reform, and effective measures to address illicit financial flows.
