President officially opens the European Year of Development 2015 conference

At a ceremony in Dublin Castle President Michael D. Higgins formally launched the European Year for Development 2015.

Every year since 1983, the EU has given the year a specific subject or theme to encourage citizen debate and dialogue, and 2015 was designated the European Year for Development, to highlight the importance of linking poverty eradication, sustainable development and climate change.

At the event, President Higgins said:

“2015 presents us with both huge challenges and opportunities. It will require brave and wise decisions from world leaders. It will also require vigilance and activism among Ireland’s NGO workers, parliamentarians, public intellectuals, academics, and beyond, to ensure that our policies are sourced in global welfare and that our policy-makers deliver on their promises.”
