President Higgins had a bilateral meeting with Ms. Cindy McCain, WFP Executive Director.
The appointment of Ms. McCain as Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), was announced in March 2023 by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Director General Qu Dongyu.
Ms. McCain is currently the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome.
The United Nations World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change. A member of the UN family, WFP is governed by an Executive Board consisting of 36 Member States, which provides intergovernmental support, direction and supervision of WFP’s activities. Ireland has a seat on the Executive Board for 2023-2024; membership is on a rotational basis.
