On the first day of his State Visit to Germany, President Higgins had a meeting with the President of the Bundestag, Mr. Wolfgang Schäuble.
The Bundestag, or Federal Congress, is the highest legislative organ in the German federal system, and has been housed in the ‘Reichstag’ building since 1999, when Berlin became the capital city of the re-unified Germany.
Mr. Schäuble, who played a key role in the re-unification process is one of the longest-serving politicians in German history and has held the post of President of the Bundestag since October 2017.
