President Higgins met with the Director of the National Gallery of Ireland Seán Rainbaird, Prof Richard Spear, Fr. Noel Barber, and former Director of the Gallery Raymond Keaveney, to mark the anniversary of the unveiling of ‘The Taking of Christ’ by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
This month marks the 25th anniversary of the unveiling of the painting at the National Gallery of Ireland.
‘The Taking of Christ’, painted in 1602 by Italian painter Caravaggio, was re-discovered in Dublin in 1990 by Sergio Benedetti, who worked as a conservator at the National Gallery of Ireland. The Jesuit order, owners of the painting, entrusted ‘The Taking of Christ’ to the National Gallery of Ireland on indefinite loan.
