President Higgins hosted a special reception to mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims at Áras an Uachtaráin where he welcomed a number of family members of those who have tragically lost their lives on the road, as well as committee members of victim’s groups.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims takes place on the third Sunday in November every year to acknowledge of victims of road traffic crashes and their families.
As of 13 November 2023, the number of traffic fatalities on Irish roads is 166, higher than the total number for 2022.
In his speech, President Higgins asked everyone, out of respect to victims of road traffic collisions and their families, but also out of basic human solidarity and care, to reflect on their own behaviour on the roads, and to consider the actions they can make to ensure that the roads become a safer place for all who use them, be they motorists, passengers, motorcyclists, e-bike and e-scooter users, pedal-cyclists or pedestrians.
