The President and Sabina Higgins hosted a Garden Party to pay tribute to people caring for others.
The event was one of a series of annual Garden Parties hosted by the President and Sabina to give recognition to, and celebrate the work of, people and organisations who have been active in promoting and building citizenship and community – projects that are central to the Presidency of Michael D. Higgins.
The Garden Parties continue a tradition established by past Presidents, and over the course of 8 events in 2017, the President and Sabina welcomed over 4,000 people from all over the island of Ireland to Áras an Uachtaráin, its house and gardens.
In this speech, the President paid tribute to people who provide care and support to people going through difficult times, saying the care workers are "providing the building blocks to construct the strong and compassionate communities that lie at the heart of any true Republic."
