President Higgins received the Governor General of New Zealand, H.E. Rt. Hon. Dame Cindy Kiro to Áras an Uachtaráin on a courtesy call.
Dame Cindy Kiro is a former public health advocate and academic and became Governor-General of New Zealand in October 2021. She is the first Maori woman and the fourth woman to hold the office.
In October 2017, at the invitation of the New Zealand government, President Higgins undertook a State Visit to New Zealand to strengthen political, cultural and economic ties between the two nations, as well as to reach out to members of the Irish diaspora living in New Zealand.
