Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the death of Sean Calleary
Date: Mon 4th Jun, 2018 | 18:39
"It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of former TD and Minister of State Sean Calleary, who gained widespread respect for his fine record of public service to Ireland, Connact and Mayo.
He will be remembered not just by his political colleagues, who held him in the greatest respect, but also by all those who valued his contributions to sport in all its forms.
His contribution to sport and the Gaelic Athletic Association of Mayo also included his defence and promotion of rugby in Connacht, his period as President of the Connacht branch of the IRFU, and his insistence that there was a future for rugby in the Connacht region.
I also recall our many discussions on development issues when he was Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs.
I wish to express my deepest sympathies to his wife Doris, his children Siofra, John, Conal and Dara, the other members of their extended family and his wide circle of friends."
