The State Drawing Room was also part of the original house and its ceiling dates from then. The chandelier commemorates the 1801 Act of Union with its entwined shamrocks, roses, thistles, and leeks and originally hung in Dublin Castle. The wall lights were made from a second similar chandelier. The Louis XIV couch and chairs came from the Palace of Versailles as a gift during Éamon de Valera’s Presidency. The room has two Adam chimneypieces.

The State Dining Room was built in 1849 for a visit by Queen Victoria and contains furniture by James Hicks of Dublin and portraits of past Presidents.
The table was used for Cabinet meetings in Leinster House up to 1960 and is still used for the first meeting of new Governments after their members receive their seals of office from the President. Portraits of past Presidents by contemporary artists line the walls. The early 19th century fireplaces were originally a gift to Archbishop Murray of Dublin and were brought to the house by the first Governor General, Tim Healy.

Áras an Uachtaráin is set amid 130 acres of parkland, though what are now the “African Plains” in Dublin Zoo were once part of the Áras Grounds.

The grounds were designed in 1840 by Decimus Burton with later additions by Ninian Niven. They contain many Victorian features, including ceremonial trees, an arboretum, wilderness, pleasure grounds, avenues, walks, ornamental lakes and walled gardens.

Visitors pass through the formal gardens to the Queen’s Walk, flanked on either side by ceremonial trees, and into the upper walled garden which is bounded on the south by a Turner peach house.

The State Reception Room dates from 1802 and was formerly the ballroom. Its ceiling centrepiece is a plaster cast of a Lafranchini panel from Riverstown House showing Time Rescuing Truth from Discord and Envy. The handwoven Donegal carpet, designed for the house by Raymond McGrath, includes the riverine heads from the Custom House representing the principal rivers of Ireland and the phoenix rising from the flames.

The original giltwood furniture is by Mack, Williams and Gibton of Dublin and the fireplace is also by Bossi. The four paintings, by the 17th century artist, Thomas Mullen, show Killarney at different times of the day. The plaster work in the ceiling is based on a ceiling painting by French painter Nicolas Poussin, called “Time Rescuing Truth from the Assaults of Discord and Envy”. Poussin made the painting of Time and his daughter for Armand Jean du Plessis, better known as Cardinal Richelieu. The plaster work is in the ‘Sotto in su’ style, with the figures foreshortened, to give the illusion that the figures are suspended in air above the viewer.

The Council of State Room was part of the original house, built in 1751, and is now generally used as a reception room.

Its gilded rococo plaster ceiling is attributed to Bartholomew Cramillion and depicts scenes from four of Aesop’s Fables. The main painting, by Simon Coleman, depicts the first meeting of the Council of State, a presidential advisory body, in 1940. The couch and chairs are replica Louis XIV.

The other side features stucco panels cast from originals in Riverstown House in Cork, the work of the Lafranchini brothers, the 18th century Swiss stuccodores who also worked on Carton and Castletown Houses. The chandeliers are Waterford crystal and the fireplaces are by the 18th century Italian crafts-man, Bossi, whose family was reputed to know the secret of how to colour.

Áras an Uachtaráin had a colourful history before becoming the Official Residence of the President of Ireland. Built in 1751 and situated in the 1,752 acres of the Phoenix Park near Dublin, the original house was built by Park Ranger Nathaniel Clements. By 1782 it had been acquired for use by the Viceroys who oversaw British rule in Ireland. Clements received £25,000 for the house.

The house continued as an official residence of the Viceroys until 1922. For ten years until 1932 it was the residence of the Governor General, the Crown’s representatives in Ireland and stood empty until 1938 when it became the Official Residence of the President of Ireland and has been used for that purpose since.

Aras an Uachtaráin is open to the public each Saturday, and each year thousands of people visit the house as guests at the many functions hosted by the President. In 2019, for instance, more than 22,000 people visited Áras an Uachtaráin.

The Presidential State Car is the official state car of the President of Ireland. It is a 1947 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith landaulette.

The car has a flagpole mounted on each of the front mudguards. Ordinarily these flew the Flag of Ireland and the Presidential Standard; when a foreign dignitary was travelling with the President then the relevant foreign flag would replace the Presidential Standard. In 1950 the car was put at the disposal of the visiting Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Norman Thomas Gilroy, and flew the Flag of Vatican City from both poles.

The car was always maintained by the Department of Defence and driven by a Military driver, until President Erskine H. Childers took office, then it was passed over to the Garda Síochána where it had been maintained since and driven by a Garda.

The historic 1947 Rolls-Royce has continued to be used in some state ceremonies, such as the National Day of Commemoration and most notably at the Irish presidential inauguration, where the car is used to transport the President (or president-elect) to and from the ceremony in Dublin Castle. It was used most recently at the 2004 inauguration of the eighth president of Ireland, Mary McAleese. However, at the inauguration of Michael D. Higgins in November 2011, the Rolls Royce was not used, but the official Mercedes-Benz S-Class was used instead.

For day to day transport, the President uses a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Éamon de Valera was a prominent statesman and political leader in 20th-century Ireland. His political career spanned over half a century, from 1917 to 1973; he served several terms as head of government and head of state. He also led the introduction of the Constitution of Ireland.
Prior to de Valera's political career, he was a commandant at Boland's Mill during the 1916 Easter Rising. He was arrested, sentenced to death but released for a variety of reasons, including the public response to the British execution of Rising leaders. He returned to Ireland after being jailed in England and became one of the leading political figures of the War of Independence. After the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, de Valera served as the political leader of Anti-Treaty Sinn Féin until 1926, when he, along with many supporters, left the party to set up Fianna Fáil, a new political party which abandoned the policy of abstentionism from Dáil Éireann.
